“Out of School” Has Arrived!

Stack of copies of the picture book Out of School and Into Nature by Suzanne Slade Illustrated by Jessica Lanan

I came home last night to find a big box on my porch. Inside? Copies of my latest illustrated book, Out of School and Into Nature: The Anna Comstock Story!

This picture book, written by Suzanne Slade and published by Sleeping Bear press, tells the story of Anna Botsford Comstock. Anna was a naturalist, artist and lover of nature who lived from 1854-1930. Among her many achievements, Anna is known for pioneering a movement to encourage schools to conduct science and nature classes for children outdoors. She’s also remembered for her detailed, meticulously illustrated books about nature, many of which are still available today.

It’s always exciting to finally see the book in print after waiting for so long. I particularly like the way that the designers featured the quotes from Anna in playful green letters.

Here’s another interior page. These insects are my own illustrated versions of some of Anna’s (much more detailed) entomological illustrations.

I’m couldn’t be happier at how it turned out! Many thanks to Sleeping Bear Press, the editor and design team, and the author, Suzanne Slade for all of their hard work. Out of School and Into Nature will be available in bookstores soon. You can find links and more images from the book here.

Thanks, Joan! Sorry I missed you in LA this year. I hope we can catch up at a conference some time soon--I'd love to hear what you're working on these days.
