I’d love to visit your school or library!

My interactive presentations offer a behind-the-scenes look at writing and illustration. Inspire your students to follow their curiosity and passions! Presentations can be tailored to different age ranges, or combined:

Author visits grade PreK-Kindergarten
PreK-Kindergarten (30-35 min.) See how books open the door to discovery! I walk the youngest students through the process from an idea to finished book. Students are left empowered and inspired to read and learn.
Author visits grade 1-3
Grades 1-3 (35-45 min.) Learn how books are written and illustrated in more detail. I show more of my research and revision process. Includes a video art demo and fun trivia game where students can test their knowledge.
Author visits grade 4-5
Grades 4-5 (45-60 min.) Includes all of the above but also challenges students to begin writing their own stories. Includes my foolproof writing plan to get past the obstacles that can stop us from telling our stories.

Presentations for older students are available upon request.

I have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from your visit. Teachers were especially grateful for your in depth presentation of the writing process and engagement of the students.

Katelyn Jackson, Teacher Librarian at Mackintosh Academy

Many of us were inspired by her very thoughtful process and beautiful art [...] people were so curious and excited about children’s book illustration and Jessica’s art that there was barely a pause between questions.

What's Included?

Early Work

Every presentation begins with examples of work I made in early elementary school. I engage with kids by showing that I was once a student just like them and explain the path I followed to become an author and illustrator. Your students will be excited to realize that very same ideas they are having right now can lead to something big someday!

Getting Ideas

Let's face it, even the youngest minds can have writer's block. The most frequently asked question is always "where do you get your ideas?" I'll cover where my best ideas came from and how anyone can cultivate creativity.

Research

In the ever-changing world of digital media it's more important than ever for kids to understand the importance of good research. I'll explain how much effort went into making sure the facts and information presented in my books was correct, and how they can make sure they are finding trustworthy information too.

Revision

Watch your students have their minds blown as I show just how many drafts and sketches I made for my books! Here's a hint: there were too many sketches to count, so I had to measure by the pound! I use short video clips to show thumbnails, sketches and dummy books.

Art Process

How do I make my illustrations? Get a look behind the scenes! I'll show some of the models I use as reference material. Students get to wach a final watercolor illustration from start to finish with a time lapse video!

Hosting Your Visit

Email me at hello@jessicalanan.com for information about event availability and fees, or download the PDF info sheet at the link below. I'll work with a local bookstore to handle book orders and sales. (Schools are welcome to handle book sales independently if you prefer. An order form can be provided.) For in-person events, I bring my presentation either as a PowerPoint file or Google Slides presentation. I’ll need a projector + speakers for sound, a screen, and a microphone for large spaces.
